L.O.T.E

The Language Other Than English (L.O.T.E.) taught at St. Finbar’s is Italian.

All students from Foundation to Year 6 have one hour of Italian per week.

Italian lessons are held in the year level classrooms.

At St. Finbar’s we highlight the value of learning a second language and its contribution to establishing the foundations of lifelong learning. The program aims to help students develop and have an understanding and respect of the Italian language and culture taught. It also helps students acquire social-cultural skills that may transfer to the other key learning areas.

Students learn to communicate in Italian by listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children are encouraged to speak using correct pronunciation, practice simple conversational tasks such as dialogues and role plays, and participate in games, songs and other activities. Students also use I.C.T. to research or investigate particular topics and have access to languages online.

At St.Finbar’s special Italian Days are organized to promote and celebrate L.O.T.E.

Students and staff come to school dressed according to the theme (eg. Carnevale), participate in a variety of activities, are entertained by a special performance (i.e visiting production/incursion or special speaker) and enjoy a special Italian lunch. It is always a very memorable and successful day enjoyed by students, staff and parents.
