Prep

The Prep year is such an important and exciting start to a child’s school journey.  At St Finbar’s we want every child to feel happy, confident and ready for school, so we place a strong focus on making the transition to school as smooth as possible through our comprehensive orientation program.

In Prep, children are explicitly taught the foundations of reading and writing through our InitiaLit program, which uses a structured synthetic phonics approach. Children learn how sounds work together to help them read and spell, while developing their early writing skills. In Mathematics, we build strong foundations through explicit teaching of number, counting and mathematical thinking.

Alongside this, there are plenty of opportunities for children to learn through hands-on activities, play, exploration and investigation. We want our Preps to be busy, curious and engaged learners!

Each Prep student is matched with a Year 5 buddy, who becomes a special friend and familiar face during their first two years of school. It’s a lovely way for our youngest students to feel connected and part of the St Finbar’s community from the very beginning.
